The "playground" for the artistic cycling is a place on a court with an area of 14 m x 11 m. During a programm of six minutes, the artist has to carry out 28 exercises. Every sixty seconds a signal helps to ease the requirements for the artists.
The programm is a freestyle event which is compiled by the artists. The athletes choose from the Artistic Cyclic Regulations of around 120 different figures. They also can choose the background music. Each figure has a points value depending on its difficulty. The sum of the value points of each 28 elements gives to the "difficulty points" of the freestyle which is previously submitted to the judges. To the difficulty points the artists obtain -effectively as an advancement- basic points for the performance.
| EXAMPLE: | difficulty points | 125.00 |
| basic points | 200.00 | |
| total disposed points | 325.00 |
Similar to Ice-skating, the difficulty (content) and the performance of a figure are judged.
Subtraction of points for the difficulty is done :
Subtraction of points for the performance is done:
The total points are obtained by the subtraction of the sum of all mistakes explained above from the previously known "difficulty points".
The same rules are valid for the twin cycling. However, only 22 excercises have to be performed; the first 9-13 exercises are carried out separately on two bicycles. Afterwards, the remaing excercises are done together at one bicyle.
